EAT-MAN Is Finally Coming Back — The Cult Anime Just Got a New Series After 28 Years

Anime fans who remember the stranger side of 1990s science-fiction anime have a reason to look back. EAT-MAN is officially returning with a completely new anime, and this time the original creator is directly involved in bringing Bolt Crank back to the screen.

Announced on September 10, EAT-MAN The Over Order marks the first new anime production in the franchise since 1998. The announcement also brings back one of the most recognizable parts of the original adaptation: Masashi Ebara will once again voice Bolt Crank.

For fans who discovered EAT-MAN years ago, that may be the biggest surprise of the announcement. This isn’t simply a remaster or another compilation project. The new series is being developed as a fresh anime adaptation of Akihito Yoshitomi’s manga.

A 28-year wait is finally over

The original EAT-MAN manga began in the 1990s and became known for its unusual central character. Bolt Crank is a wandering adventurer with a bizarre ability: he can eat metal and later reproduce objects and weapons from what he has consumed.

That strange idea helped give the series an identity of its own at a time when science-fiction anime could still feel wildly experimental.

The franchise previously received anime adaptations in the late 1990s. Now, almost three decades later, Bolt Crank is returning in EAT-MAN The Over Order.

The new project is being produced by Studio Cab. Shunji Oga is directing, while Yoshitomi is handling the screenplay and original design concepts. Satoshi Hirayama is responsible for the character designs.

That combination makes the comeback particularly interesting. The person who created Bolt Crank is not simply watching from the sidelines — Yoshitomi is directly involved in shaping the new version.

The original Bolt Crank voice is returning

One of the most notable details from the announcement is Masashi Ebara’s return as Bolt Crank.

Ebara voiced the character in the previous anime adaptations, making his return a direct connection between the old and new versions.

For a franchise returning after such a long gap, keeping the original voice of its central character gives the project a familiar starting point while leaving plenty of room for the new production to establish its own identity.

A teaser visual has already been released, showing Bolt Crank standing against a huge industrial landscape filled with machinery, ruins and towering structures. It gives the new anime a darker, expansive science-fiction atmosphere rather than presenting the comeback as a simple nostalgia project.

There is still one big question

While the announcement has confirmed the anime, a release date has not yet been revealed.

That means fans shouldn’t expect a premiere month or streaming schedule just yet. The project is still at the announcement stage, with the teaser video and visual serving as the first proper look at what is being developed.

That could make the next round of information especially important. Details about the release window, additional cast members, episode format and streaming platforms could significantly change how much attention the comeback receives outside the existing fanbase.

Why this comeback stands out

Anime has seen plenty of older franchises return in recent years, but EAT-MAN The Over Order has a particularly unusual advantage: it is bringing back a character whose original concept still feels distinctive.

Bolt Crank isn’t another standard hero returning for a sequel. His ability to consume metal and recreate objects remains one of the strangest hooks in the medium.

Now that the original creator is involved and Ebara is returning, the new anime has a direct connection to the franchise’s earlier identity while giving a new production team the opportunity to introduce it to a different generation.

For longtime fans, the announcement is a trip back to the 1990s. For newer anime viewers, it could be an unexpected introduction to one of the medium’s more unusual science-fiction characters.

And after 28 years, the wait to see what Bolt Crank does next has officially started.
