Not everyone has the time to watch an anime series with hundreds of episodes. Sometimes, you just want an interesting story that you can enjoy over a weekend without making a long-term commitment.
Fortunately, many anime series offer complete stories in a relatively small number of episodes. Some focus on mystery and suspense, while others explore friendship, fantasy, romance and everyday life.
Short anime can also be a good choice when you want to try a new genre or take a break from a long-running show. If you are looking for something to watch this weekend, here are seven anime series worth adding to your watchlist.
1. Erased: A Mystery That Keeps You Guessing
Erased is a strong choice for viewers who enjoy mystery and suspense. The story follows Satoru Fujinuma, a young man who experiences a strange phenomenon that sends him back in time to prevent tragic events.
When a serious incident affects his own life, he finds himself transported to his childhood. He must understand what happened in the past and try to prevent a series of terrible events. The series has just 12 episodes, making it manageable for a weekend viewing session. Its biggest strength is the way it combines emotional moments with an ongoing mystery. Each episode gives viewers another reason to discover what happens next.
2. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners: A Futuristic Action Story
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an action-packed anime set in a dangerous futuristic city where technology and human life are closely connected. The story follows David Martinez, a young man who faces personal loss and financial difficulties. His circumstances lead him into the world of mercenaries known as edgerunners.
With just 10 episodes, the series delivers a fast-moving story filled with action, difficult choices and emotional moments. Its distinctive visual style and futuristic setting make it stand out from traditional anime adventures. Viewers should be aware that the series contains strong violence and mature themes, so it may not be suitable for younger audiences.
3. The Tatami Galaxy: A Different Kind of College Story
The Tatami Galaxy offers something different for viewers who prefer unusual storytelling.
The series follows a university student who looks back on his college experiences and wonders how his life might have changed if he had made different choices. Across its 11 episodes, the story explores friendship, missed opportunities, personal expectations and the search for a satisfying life.
Its fast dialogue and unusual presentation may take some time to get used to. However, viewers who enjoy thoughtful stories may find its approach refreshing. Rather than relying on action scenes, the anime focuses on how small decisions can influence a person’s experiences and relationships.
4. Violet Evergarden: An Emotional Journey
Violet Evergarden is worth watching if you prefer beautiful animation and emotional storytelling. The story follows Violet, a young woman who begins working as an Auto Memory Doll. Her job involves writing letters for people who struggle to express their feelings.
Through these experiences, she slowly learns about emotions, relationships and the meaning of the words spoken to her by someone important in her life. The main series contains 13 episodes, making it a suitable choice for viewers who want a complete weekend watch. Its detailed backgrounds, expressive characters and gentle storytelling are among its biggest attractions. Keep some tissues nearby if emotional stories tend to affect you.
5. Odd Taxi: A Crime Mystery With an Unusual Cast
Odd Taxi is a crime mystery that stands apart because of its unusual characters and tightly connected plot. The story centres on Odokawa, a quiet taxi driver who becomes connected to a missing-person case through his passengers and everyday conversations.
At first, the different characters and events may appear unrelated. As the story develops, however, small details begin to connect in surprising ways. The 13-episode series rewards viewers who pay attention to conversations and clues. Its dialogue, dark humour and gradual revelations make it especially appealing to mystery fans. If you enjoy crime dramas where ordinary details become important later, Odd Taxi deserves a place on your list.
6. A Place Further Than the Universe: Adventure and Friendship
A Place Further Than the Universe follows a group of schoolgirls who set out on an ambitious journey to Antarctica. The adventure begins when Mari Tamaki meets Shirase Kobuchizawa, a determined girl who wants to travel to Antarctica for personal reasons.
As the girls prepare for their journey, they meet new friends and face the challenges of leaving familiar surroundings behind. The series has 13 episodes and combines adventure with emotional character development. Its story is particularly appealing to viewers who enjoy themes of friendship, courage and stepping outside their comfort zones. It also offers a refreshing change from anime focused mainly on fighting or fantasy powers.
7. Terror in Resonance: A Tense Psychological Thriller
Terror in Resonance is a 2014 anime series directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. The story follows two teenage boys known as Nine and Twelve, whose actions draw the attention of the police in Tokyo. A detective begins investigating their activities while trying to understand the reasons behind their mysterious plans.
With 11 episodes, the series develops its central mystery without requiring a long viewing commitment. Its atmosphere, music and psychological tension make it an interesting option for viewers who enjoy serious crime stories. The series deals with terrorism, violence and other mature themes, so viewers should consider its content before watching.
Which Short Anime Should You Watch First?
Your choice depends on the kind of story you enjoy most. Erased and Odd Taxi are good options for mystery fans, while Cyberpunk: Edgerunners suits viewers looking for futuristic action.
