Anime is not only about school life, fighting, romance or fantasy worlds. Some series take viewers far beyond Earth and explore what life could look like in space. From dangerous missions to daily life aboard a spaceship, these stories offer different ways to enjoy science fiction.

Space anime can be a good choice for viewers who enjoy exploring new worlds, meeting unusual characters and thinking about the future. Some shows focus on realistic problems, while others mix space travel with comedy, action and mystery.

Here are five space anime worth adding to your watchlist.

1. Astra Lost in Space

Astra Lost in Space is a good starting point for viewers who enjoy adventure and mystery. The story follows a group of students who travel into space for a school camp. Their trip takes a dangerous turn when they suddenly find themselves far away from their planned destination.

The students discover an abandoned spaceship and use it to begin their journey back home. However, returning safely is not easy. They must manage limited supplies, visit different planets and work together despite their differences.

Each stop brings new challenges, and the group slowly learns more about the situation they are facing. The series combines space exploration with teamwork and unexpected discoveries.

It is especially enjoyable for viewers who like stories where small details become important as the plot moves forward.

2. Space Brothers

Space Brothers offers a different view of life beyond Earth. Instead of focusing mainly on battles or aliens, it follows people who dream of becoming astronauts.

The story centres on two brothers who made a childhood promise to travel into space. As adults, their lives take different directions, but the dream remains important to them.

The series shows the hard work behind becoming an astronaut. Training, competition, personal doubts and difficult decisions all play a part in the journey.

What makes this anime interesting is its focus on ordinary people trying to achieve something difficult. The characters make mistakes, face setbacks and learn from their experiences.

Viewers who prefer inspiring stories and realistic goals may find Space Brothers a refreshing change from action-heavy anime.

3. Planetes

Planetes takes place in a future where space travel has become part of everyday life. People travel beyond Earth, and businesses operate in orbit. However, this future also has practical problems that need attention.

The story follows a team responsible for collecting space debris. These discarded objects may look unimportant, but they can create serious risks for spacecraft and astronauts.

The characters deal with their work, relationships, career plans and personal ambitions. Their jobs may not sound as exciting as exploring unknown planets, but the series shows why even small tasks matter in a larger system.

Planetes stands out because it treats space as a workplace rather than only a place for heroic adventures. It explores responsibility, money, ambition and the human cost of progress.

It is worth watching for viewers who enjoy science fiction with a grounded approach to future technology.

4. Cowboy Bebop

Cowboy Bebop mixes space travel with action, music and stories about people trying to move forward from their past.

The series follows a group of bounty hunters who travel through space in search of criminals. Their jobs take them to different locations, where they meet people with complicated histories and unexpected problems.

Although the show includes action and humour, it also gives attention to loneliness, regret and personal choices. The main characters do not always get the results they want, which makes their journeys feel more personal.

Its relaxed style, memorable music and mix of genres give it a distinct identity. Each episode can offer a different kind of story, making the series suitable for viewers who enjoy variety.

Cowboy Bebop is a strong option for those who want a space adventure that also explores human emotions.

5. Space Dandy

Space Dandy brings a lighter and more colourful side to space anime. It follows Dandy, an alien hunter who travels across the universe looking for unusual creatures.

His adventures rarely go exactly as planned. He often finds himself in strange situations, meets unfamiliar life forms and makes decisions that lead to funny results.

Unlike more serious science-fiction shows, Space Dandy does not always follow a predictable direction. Its episodes experiment with different ideas, visual styles and types of humour.

This makes it a fun choice for viewers who want something less serious after watching intense action or dramatic stories.

The series also shows how creative anime can be when it imagines different planets, alien species and possible futures.

Which Space Anime Should You Watch First?

The right choice depends on the kind of story you enjoy. Astra Lost in Space is suitable for viewers who want adventure and mystery, while Space Brothers focuses on ambition and personal growth.

Planetes is a better fit for those interested in realistic space-related work. Cowboy Bebop offers action and emotional storytelling, while Space Dandy brings comedy and unusual adventures.

Space anime can make the universe feel both exciting and familiar. Even when the setting is far from Earth, the stories often focus on friendship, work, dreams and the choices people make.

If you want to explore a different side of anime, pick the series that matches your mood and take your next trip beyond Earth.
