A little girl, an ageing dragon and a story that continues even after death. The upcoming anime The Skull Dragon’s Precious Daughter has released its first main trailer and visual, giving fans a closer look at one of the more unusual fantasy stories heading to television in 2027.
The anime is based on the manga by Ichi Yukishiro. Its central relationship is not built around a powerful hero defeating enemies or saving the world. Instead, the story follows a young girl and the dragon who raises her, with their bond becoming the heart of the adventure.
A girl and a dragon with an unusual bond
The story begins in the Forest of Scraps, a place where unwanted things are abandoned. Eve, a young girl, is left there and discovered by Nem, an old dragon approaching the end of his life. Rather than leave her behind, Nem takes Eve in and raises her as his own child.
For years, the two share a quiet life deep in the forest. That peace eventually comes to an end when Nem dies. Eve, however, has a power of her own. She manages to bring him back, this time as a skeletal dragon.
Their reunion gives the story a different direction. Nem is no longer the same living dragon who once protected Eve, and his new body may not last forever. He decides that the two must travel to the human world, where Eve can learn more about her abilities and prepare for a future beyond the forest.
The journey also has a practical side. Nem wants Eve to build connections with other people, take care of herself and learn how the human world works. Their adventure mixes fantasy with the everyday challenges of raising a child.
Kana Hanazawa and Kazuhiko Inoue lead the cast
The first promotional video introduces the voices of the two main characters. Kana Hanazawa will play Eve, while veteran voice actor Kazuhiko Inoue will voice Nem.
Hanazawa is known for roles across a wide range of anime, and Eve gives her a character whose lively nature sits alongside a difficult past. Inoue takes on Nem, the dragon who becomes Eve’s parent and guide. Their performances will be central to making the unusual family relationship feel believable.
The production has also confirmed its main creative team. Kuniyasu Nishina is directing the series, Yuka Yamada is handling series composition, and Tomoya Atsumi is responsible for character designs. Doga Kobo, the studio behind the adaptation, is producing the animation. Background art is being handled by KUSANAGI, Daiki Kuribayashi and Yuki Hatakeyama.
The first visual and trailer offer an early look at the world and its characters, although many details about the finished series remain under wraps.
When will the anime arrive?
The Skull Dragon’s Precious Daughter is scheduled to air in 2027. An exact premiere date, episode count, Japanese broadcast network and international streaming partners have not yet been announced.
The original manga began on Mag Garden’s MAGCOMI website in September 2020 before moving to Monthly Comic Garden. Its story has also reached English-language readers through Seven Seas Entertainment.
The premise gives the adaptation room to move between gentle moments and a larger fantasy journey. Eve and Nem are not a typical hero-and-sidekick pairing. Their relationship is closer to that of a parent and child, even as the dragon’s unusual condition puts a limit on their time together.
For viewers who enjoy fantasy anime with emotional relationships at the centre, this is a title worth keeping on the watchlist. The first trailer has introduced the main voices and confirmed the 2027 window, but fans will have to wait for the next announcement to learn when the series will actually begin.
