No Anniversary, No Holiday — Couples Are Travelling “Just Because” Now

A trip does not always need a birthday, anniversary or long weekend anymore. For many Indian travellers, simply wanting a break has become reason enough to pack a bag. That shift is showing up strongly in new travel research, and couples are part of the wider move towards more spontaneous, experience-led holidays.

A Booking.com study conducted with YouGov found that 58% of Indian travellers had taken a trip simply because they wanted to. Another 57% said they had taken two or three leisure trips in the previous year that were not connected to a major life event or celebration. The idea is simple: instead of waiting for a special date, people are travelling when they feel they need a change.

Couples Are Finding Their Own Reasons to Get Away

For couples, this can mean a three-day escape after a stressful month at work, a spontaneous road trip or a quiet stay somewhere outside the city. The trip does not have to be a traditional romantic holiday. It can simply be time away from routines, phones, traffic and the same four walls.

The trend is also arriving at an interesting point in India’s travel calendar. Travel companies Thomas Cook India and SOTC say September and October are increasingly becoming an additional travel period, with demand for short breaks and experience-led holidays growing during these months.

The “Just Because” Trip Is More About the Moment

The reasons behind these trips can be surprisingly ordinary. Recent research found that Indian travellers are taking trips after small personal wins, simply to escape daily routines or because they want to enjoy a change of scenery. Some are even planning travel around everyday situations rather than waiting for a traditional holiday window.

That makes the trend especially relatable for couples. Instead of saving every holiday for one big annual trip, they can take smaller breaks when schedules allow. A few days in a quiet hill town, a beach stay or a heritage city can become a way to spend time together without needing a special occasion attached to it.

The interesting change is not that Indians suddenly want to travel more. It is that the reason for travelling is becoming much more personal. For couples, “we felt like getting away” can now be enough of a plan. And with September and October emerging as another active travel window, that spontaneous trip may be easier to fit into the calendar than waiting for the next major holiday.
